Moles
Pest control for moles is required in the following areas: Agriculture – Moles cause significant damage to silage by contaminating the grass with upturned soil and are a possible source of the disease Listeriosis found in livestock that feed on the silage. Exposed stones from molehills may also damage blades during cutting. Golf & Bowling Greens – Mole hills disturb the playing surface on all sports grounds. Domestic Gardens – moles burrowing under plants can result in the plants witling and dying.
Biology
A single moles territory can cover between 400 – 1600m², dependant on food availability. Their diet mainly consists of earthworms, but also on various other invertebrates such as slugs and insect larvae. Moles are very active within their tunnel system, searching for worms and other insects that have fallen through into the tunnels.
The breeding season is between February and June and there is usually one litter in spring and a second litter may be born in summer. After a 4 week gestation period 3-4 blind and furless moles are born. They develop fast and leave the nest at 4 weeks old.
